SCRAP Flag Sewing Competition

Attention students, art teachers, troop leaders, 4-H leaders, and sewing enthusiasts!

The SCRAP Flag Sewing Competition is back for Year 3!

Explore the New Manufacturing and Edgington Studio invites students to create a one-of-a-kind flag inspired by this year’s theme: Famous West Virginians.

Each design should creatively and clearly represent a famous West Virginian. Students can honor an artist, athlete, inventor, leader, trailblazer, or another notable person who has made an impact.

The Best in Show winner will receive a brand-new sewing machine!

Classroom Engagement

We are happy to have had several opportunities to engage with students. We were invited to speak at Sherrard Middle School career day and helped teach over 200 students how to sew a button onto a swatch of fabric. Through the Explore: The New Manufacturing video contest, we had the students over for a studio tour and hands on activity to make pin cushions as an assembly line. We always love how excited they get seeing their finished products!

Student Engagement

As part of the Explore program within the West Virginia Manufacturer’s Association, we were partnered with Sherrard Middle School to make a video about “What makes manufacturing so cool?” We were so excited when the students had hands-on experience sewing in our Studio and wanted to get machines for their classroom!

Fabric Remnant Swap Program with Ohio County Schools

Thanks to an agreement with the City of Wheeling, we are now partnering with Ohio County Schools to send fabric remnants from our studio for the children to use. Please contact us if you would like to drop off your remnants for collection from our studio as well!

Recycling Initiatives

We love our 36-inch printer for making all of the design patterns for our clients, though paper waste is a reality and we are doing our part to make sure any unused paper scrap is properly recycled to where it can do the most good. We’re making our HP Plotter a lean, green waste-fighting machine!

In partnership with HP and Nespresso, we also recycle both our ink cartridges and our coffee pods. Keep the cycle going!

Animal Shelter Donations

It was our pleasure to donate several Studio-made dog beds and dog-themed face masks to the Ohio County Animal Shelter. Big thanks to Doug and the shelter crew for their help. We hope the pups stay cozy until they find new homes, especially our little friend in the photo here. Looking forward to continuing to partner with area animal shelters in the future!
